When Van Gogh's "Starry Night” comes to real life – Technology in Museum Education

As an art lover and big fan of Van Gogh, I spend most of my leisure time roaming in the museum for long days. Every time I saw the fabulous painting, there is always a question come to my mind. Is it possible to experience life in old centuries? Now, my dream comes true. Since the advent of VR, there have been great changes in art industry and education. We can Turn imagination into reality!

In 2016, the well-known classic art creation "Starry Night" was designed to be a 3D-VR version in Shanghai. In this case, the public can immerse themselves into the "Starry Night". Thanks to the first works of the Magic Dimensional Digital CG team, we can wear VR glasses and get into Van Gogh's fantasy world. During the process of VR experience, "Starry Night" world is at your feet.

After developing 3D-VR of painting, some of the artists start to utilize the same way to create their own 3D-VR painting. This brings out a new revolution and breaks out the rules of painting on the horizontal surface in art industry. Painting in 360° space and fulfilled the audience’s desire of getting into imagination is a trend. In several high educations art schools also start to teach students to adapt VR skill in their work of art. To be more concrete to this concept, you can find out the example from the following videos.

  2. It’s so good!! I am thinking about that we won’t keep history and ancient lives in imagination if we do this 3D-VR of painting to historic items like “Along the River During the Qingming Festival”(清明上河圖)!

  7. It’s such a pleasure that we’re at a time to see this development. I think this VR technique pours more vitality to art and fuels more imaginations. We can now experience lifes in those art pieces! It would be meaningful for education; students can have almost the same experience or even more to see things when they’re not in real life.

  9. This VR technology in art is similar to what I saw the movable 3d technology that shown on the Chinese famous painting "among the river during qingming festival" in Hong Kong in few years ago. I believe that if VR can also apply to it, we can really "back to the history ".

  11. Really interesting news! 3D-VR of painting is quite cool, bring us new sensories, however, is there a way for me to control 'the visit' of the painting? I just had the feeling that I was watching a movie, while on the other hand, when I am watching any painting it will be my imagination to choose where to go.
